Two studies — one looking at business intelligence in health care and the other at what jobs areas will be offering employment — suggest that while BI isn’t immune to the recession, opportunities still exist. Everybody understands that times will remain tough for the foreseeable future. The sense from these two items is that the situation is far from hopeless.

People who do BI for a living love numbers and facts. However, they must remember that computer programs only go so far. Nate Silver, a noted baseball statistician and the founder of one of the hottest sites during the presidential election season–his final predictions were scary in their accuracy–says that context is necessary for real understanding and to enable the organization to make the best decisions. Seeing a situation in real world terms will help avoid missteps and make a successful implementation far more likely.

remain useful in the long run, they must be supplemented by a separate class of easy-to-use and quickly deployed “rapid fire” products.
