John Synder, Chesapeake’s Director of Business Development, says that Cumberland–which has more than 1,000 locations, mostly on the east coast–will use the tools to ensure that store receipts and local bank deposits match.

Vendors say that business intelligence is a way to weather the recession. This is true for companies that have a platform in place. Those that don’t, however, aren’t likely to be in a position (or the mood) to roll out BI technology now. Even if they did, the real payback wouldn’t start until after the recession begins to fade. What these companies can do is file this away and think more proactively in the future — if they have one.
