The View From Here: Think Proactively — For the Next Recession

February 10, 2009

In researching and writing for The IT-Finance Connection and Information Technology Business Edge – a site for which I freelance extensively – I’ve run into a number of vendors who say their technologies will help organizations survive the recession.

Proponents mention VoIP and its related applications, such as unified communications and instant messaging, as efficiency-builders that can help during these troubled times. Mobility is another. A third is business intelligence.

Of course, organizations that have core BI platforms in place should exploit every feature and perhaps make a savvy incremental investment or two. But those that haven’t upgraded and older system -– or invested in a platform at all — should forget about it for now. The time to buy a life preserver is before the boat begins sinking.

Most companies aren’t in the mood to make capital investments, and those that are won’t have systems in place until either the recession is over — or we all are selling apples on street corners.

There is one thing that companies without significant BI platforms can do, however. They can recognize how vital it is to have infrastructure in place that can be ratcheted up in times of need and make sure their organization is prepared for the next emergency.
