In theory, IT consolidation is great. It can improve coordination and let the organization understand precisely what is going on in the field. IT consultant and IT-Finance Connection Advisory Board member Cliff Berg says that real world problems arise when the desire for control and measurement becomes an obstacle to the performance of the task at hand. This, he says, can lead staff to seek non-approved and hidden resources.

Last month, Sybase introduced version 15.1 of its IQ family. Lisa Hopkins, the Director of Product Marketing for Sybase IQ, tells the IT-Finance Connection that the new product operates in software and takes a column-based, in-line approach. She says that Sybase IQ 15.1 saves 75 percent of the time used by previous versions of the family. Those older versions, she says, speed applications by 10 to 100 times. (Podcast time: 12:08)
