Five Minutes of News: RoamBI from MeLLmo
May 19, 2009
Listen to the podcast:

Today, MeLLmo — a new company — released RoamBI, its signature product. The application family is aimed at bringing advanced business intelligence capabilities to Apple’s iPhone. (Screen shots are at left and right.)
I had the opportunity to chat with the company’s principals, Santiago Sr. and David Becerra last week. Santiago is the chairman and David is the Vice President of User Interface. The challenge that the Becerras are undertaking is to design a user interface that affords users a way to get to the data that is easily accessed on a desktop or laptop. In the podcast, David Becerra explains the approach the company took, which was partly based on a study of how people consciously and unconsciously approach charts and other graphical material.
It is clear that the mobile and desktop interfaces are so profoundly dissimilar that different fundamental approaches are necessary. That much has been clear since the birth of the cellphone. It’s becoming a bigger issue, however, because the ever greater capacity of broadband networks and the power of smartphones makes it feasible for sophisticated applications to be delivered and processed. The weak links–the small screen and an inappropriate user interfaces–in essence are growing weaker. Smartphone screens will get no bigger. That leaves it up to the UI folks, who must become more creative.
The bottom line is that a tremendous amount of money will be made by those who successfully make deeper levels of information available to mobile users. The Becerras are doing that–and they are starting with BI.

Got something to say?

Looks like a great BI tool. I just downloaded it to my iPod Touch to try it out. The Founders of MeLLmo have an incredible track record in the BI application space, so I would expect big things from them.
