Podcast: Using Business Intelligence to Better Manage Telecom

March 9, 2009

By Al Subbloie, CEO, Tangoe Inc.

The continuing explosive growth of “smart” mobile communications device usage in the enterprise is currently creating unprecedented challenges for organizations looking to reduce mobile support costs, mitigate enterprise security risks, and better manage their mobile network infrastructure. This growth has led to a significant increase in the need to more efficiently manage the distribution, usage and enterprise-wide mobile device migrations. As such, the telecom expense management (TEM) and mobile device management (MDM) spaces have undergone a convergence of technologies, addressing these emerging issues while having positive expense reduction and network management effects.

Listen to the Podcast:

Because of this, evaluating solutions to better meet mobile smart device needs while reducing bottom line costs is being achieved through TEM and Business Intelligence (BI). While it’s one thing to maintain an inventory, pay bills, or put processes in place to ensure accuracy, it is another to take all the data that is generated from following TEM processes and analyze the data for the company’s benefit.

This is the role of Business Intelligence (BI) in TEM: Being able to harness the value of a company’s data to budget and forecast telecom spend, perform “What If” analysis on network conversions or contractual terms, or simply distribute out pertinent performance data about the telecom network and its cost to all the consumers of those services that are paying for them. Business Intelligence should also be used to measure the performance of your telecom network by using Key Performance Indicators (KPI) that will automatically alert managers when certain thresholds have been exceeded.

Another key advantage of TEM, when utilized for BI, is the ability to help enterprises develop new benchmarks and ultimately improve business decision making by leveraging the visibility, significant savings, and control realized by establishing and aligning mobile resources with business needs. Because it is more important than ever for companies to derive maximum value from their existing investments while also capitalizing on the increasing mobile workforce, being able to see what’s really going on across the devices and enterprise is increasing crucial.

Learning the key elements in establishing and aligning mobile resources with business needs as well as the basis of why TEM will become increasingly important to the enterprise will create both opportunities and challenges for players in the space. Utilizing both TEM and BI, enterprises will be able to evaluate solutions to better meet mobile smart device needs and reduce their bottom line costs to the company.

To correctly and securely manage the deployment and lifecycle of mobile handsets while also analyzing the data that is generated from TEM processes for the company’s benefit, the following questions should be considered that Tangoe’s CEO Al Subbloie will address:

  • How can the enterprise realize significant savings through TEM and communications lifecycle management solutions?
  • How can the enterprise mitigate the costly risks of lost or stolen smart devices?
  • How can the enterprise use TEM solutions to forecast telecom spend and perform “What If” analyses?
  • How can you simplify processes and lower the costs of managing and supporting smart devices?
  • How can enterprises use BI to measure the performance of telecom networks by using Key Performance Indicators (KPI)?
  • How are TEM and communications lifecycle management solutions helping develop new benchmarks?
